Judge Signs Court Ruling

The ruling concludes the Board arbitrarily targeted Madison and McKenny when it began the closure process without an adequate written analysis. The Board argued that it fixed the error by developing the analysis after the vote, and by delaying its final decision. The Court disagreed.

"The Court holds the appeal is not moot because the Board HAS NOT FORMALLY RESCINDED its December 14, 2023, vote and the Board is not legally bound by its statement that it will refrain from making a final school closure decision until April 25, 2024". Click here to read the rest of the ruling.

Exactly. The board never restarted its invalid closure process and would be acting illegally if it proceeds with closures.

“Based on all this, I don't believe that we are in the position, or even allowed, to close schools.” Director Maria Flores, at the 3/28 Board Meeting.

Additionally, the budget deficit is now $380K and OSD can bridge this gap without any cuts to student-facing programs and services.

BOARD MEETING UPDATE

Student Outcome 4 (see all outcomes here) was discussed at the 3/28 meeting (see presentation here).

  • Much work has been done in getting more and more school documents translated to multiple languages.

  • The Native American high school graduation rate has increased to 100%!!

  • 42% of secondary students feel a sense of belonging (national average=55%) and 35% have cultural awareness.

Wouldn’t it be great to see more cultural events at each of our schools? These foster a sense of belonging while also celebrating the many cultures that make up our beautiful community.
